About People's ParkPeople’s Park is located just a stone throw from the Chinatown MRT, next to the Chinatown OG building and near the shopping centres such as people park complex and people park centre. It originated from 1920s when roadside food vendors began to flourish near the Peoples’ Park Hill. The whole thriving vicinity was then transformed into People’s Park Market comprising both wet market and hawker center. Though the market did not have attractive outlook and might look a little hideous, the market had a unique vibes for the foreign workers due to the wide variety of food that were sold such as Hokkien Fried Noodles, Hainanese Curry Chicken, Ke Jia Tofu etc. These foods are native to the foreign workers and helped in lessening the impact of their home sickness. From 1955 to 1966, it was peak for People’s Park Market with many other different types of shops such as the textile and western grocery booming. Then tragedy strike, on the night of Christmas in 1966, there was a big fire that burned everything into ashes. The devastating news bought many to tears; luckily the government stepped in and built a temporary tent for the vendors to continue their operation. And in June 1968, the People’s Park building is reopened for operation. People's Park is now an iconic building for Chinatown area, renowned for its wide variety of delicious hawker food at the 1st storey. The hawker centre in People’s Park being one of the most well-known in Chinatown, have produced many dubbed “celebrity hawkers” who excel in their specialty. Some stalls always have perpetually long queue especially during lunch hour, at times so long that one might wonder if they're giving food for free. The 2nd and 3rd storey are not to be missed too! Over the years, the trades there had transformed from being predominantly textiles to the present eclectic mix of the most current fashion trends and gorgeous textiles in shops that brings back the most nostalgic memories. For tourist, visitors or expatriates, People’s Park is one of the best places to enjoy the taste, sight and smell of local food culture and life of ordinary Singaporeans and yet be able to enjoy a great shopping experience |
