About Tampines Street 11

At the beginning…

As recent as the 1970’s there were still over 20 sand quarries operating in Tampines. Needless to say majority of the early residents were employed by the numerous quarries and small farms were the only other notable business. Despite having an abundance of quality and valuable teak wood from the Tampinis tree, from which the name Tampines derived from and the town named after, early settlers struggled to earn a decent living.

It is perhaps symbolic that the town named after a tree famous for its hardness was also the first town to be developed under the Precinct concept.

During the rapid development of Singapore in the 70’s and 80’s, changes were unfolding daily and concrete structures were aggressively phasing out farms and kampong villages. The government however, realized the importance of social cohesiveness and the sense of belonging, so came about the Precinct concept.

Building a range of facilities and amenities within the town, together with generous subsidies, encouraged residents to perform their daily needs within the community and enhance relationships between neighbors. Being the first also meant countless unique (but not necessarily correct!) attractions, all of which created a deep feeling of pride and belonging amongst residents.

It is now generally agreed that should you ever relocate to Tampines, it will be highly probable that you will never move anywhere else ! There are countless families which have been residing there since the start, with their children continuing too by choosing to buy their first houses where they grew up.

Now a bustling town with a wonderful range of shopping at both famous Tampines Mall and the shop-houses, Tampines now attracts visitors from all over Singapore for whatever the occasion or need. IKEA, Giant Supermarket and Courts Mega store also chose Tampines to open their new branches. At street 11 you will also find the Round Market, a model market in cleanliness, variety and concept. Several ASEAN neighbors have used this market as a source of invaluable information.

A tight knit community, pioneer community development projects and fantastic shopping are just some of the wonderful attractions awaiting you at Tampines. Whether you’ve been there before or a Tourist, there is always something new to explore, eat or enjoy. So what are you waiting for !
